Jos, Plateau State — An outbreak of diphtheria in parts of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State has reportedly claimed 15 lives, with 117 suspected cases recorded, according to health authorities.
The figures were disclosed by the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (DSNO) for Jos North, Baks Bulus, who said the deaths were recorded within three days of the outbreak and warned that additional cases could emerge if urgent preventive measures are not taken.
Health officials explained that diphtheria is a highly contagious bacterial infection that can spread through close contact with an infected person and through shared personal items such as utensils and towels.
Residents in affected communities have been urged to maintain good hygiene, avoid overcrowded environments and seek immediate medical attention if they develop symptoms or suspect exposure. Health officials also advised against self-medication.
Vaccination remains one of the key measures for preventing severe diphtheria and its complications, particularly among children who have not completed their recommended doses.
