The tragic news of the ambush and killing of six Nigerian soldiers by bandits at Roro, Karaga, and Rumace communities in Bassa Ward, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State has deeply saddened the nation.
According to reports from Daily Trust, the soldiers were responding to a distress call when they were ambushed by armed bandits at Roro village.
Alongside the soldiers, a hunter and two farmers were also killed during the attack, and several houses, food banks, and motorcycles were set ablaze by the assailants.
Residents recounted the harrowing ordeal, stating that the attack began around 9 pm on Friday and lasted for hours.
Mustapha Bassa, a source familiar with the incident, described how the bandits, riding motorcycles, unleashed a hail of gunfire as they moved through the communities.
Confirming the incident, Niger State’s Commissioner for Homeland Security, Brigadier-General Bello Abdullahi Mohammed, assured that the government is actively pursuing the perpetrators to ensure they face justice.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the affected families both in the short and long term.
This tragic event adds to the ongoing security challenges faced by the nation and comes just a month after the loss of 17 senior military officers, including soldiers and army officers, in a similar incident in Delta State. The officers had been deployed on a peacekeeping mission to quell community clashes in the area.
