The Federal High Court in Abuja granted bail of ₦500 million to former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, on Friday, following his plea of not guilty to allegations of an ₦80 billion fraud brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Justice Emeka Nwite, the presiding judge, outlined the conditions for Bello’s bail, which include:
Bail Conditions
- Monetary Bail:
- Bello must provide bail in the sum of ₦500 million.
- Sureties:
- Two sureties in like sum are required.
- The sureties must own properties in Abuja.
- Title documents for these properties must be verified by the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court.
- Both sureties are required to swear an affidavit of means.
- Travel Documents:
- Bello must deposit his international passport with the court.
- Photographs:
- Bello and his sureties are to submit two recent passport photographs each to the court.
Interim Custody
Until the bail conditions are met, Bello will remain in custody at the Kuje Correctional Center in Abuja.
Allegations Against Bello
The EFCC arraigned Bello on a 19-count charge, including allegations of money laundering involving ₦80 billion. The charges stem from his tenure as Kogi State governor. Bello has denied all allegations.
