Key political figures, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and associates of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, convened for a confidential meeting with the leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Abuja on Tuesday.
The meeting, held at the SDP’s national secretariat, has sparked widespread speculation about potential political shifts as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
Among the prominent attendees were Maj. Hamza Al-Mustapha, a former presidential candidate and one-time chief security officer to the late Gen. Sani Abacha, and Otunba Segun Showunmi, who previously served as Atiku’s spokesperson.
Addressing the media, SDP National Chairman Shehu Gabam described the meeting as an opportunity for “like-minded individuals” to connect and discuss Nigeria’s future.
Gabam clarified, “There has been no official declaration from El-Rufai or anyone else about joining the SDP. However, the discussions remain open, focusing on collaboration and negotiations for a better Nigeria. This isn’t solely about party politics; it’s about the direction our nation should take.”
He further elaborated, “Our aim is to bring together individuals who share a vision for Nigeria’s development so we can work collectively to improve the quality of life for all citizens.
“It’s important to note that the media’s attention has been drawn to a few names, but we’ve hosted several dignitaries from various political backgrounds at our office. These discussions centre on strategies to stabilise the country and provide constructive, forward-thinking advice to the current administration to prevent crises.
“When the government faces challenges, it impacts every Nigerian. Our role is to foster stability. Once decisions are finalised, we will issue an official statement. For now, the conversations are ongoing, and we are working towards a consensus. At the appropriate time, our collective plans will be shared with the public.”
Highlighting the SDP’s approach, Gabam emphasised that the party prides itself on being a constructive opposition, offering solutions rather than provoking conflict.
He added, “We are constantly engaging with other influential figures. Today’s meeting is part of our routine dialogue with stakeholders about the nation’s future.
“It’s encouraging to see more prominent individuals aligning with our vision. The SDP, rooted in a legacy of responsibility and respect, remains committed to providing sound leadership for Nigeria.
“Our priority is the well-being of the nation. We aim for peace, stability, economic growth, and an environment conducive to investment. These goals transcend political ambitions.
“As a responsible opposition, we are following the path once taken by the APC when it successfully challenged the PDP. Our mission is clear—advancing Nigeria’s progress above all else.”
