The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled an ambitious plan to empower 50 million citizens with digital literacy skills by 2027, aiming for 95% digital literacy by 2030. This initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s vision to enhance the nation’s technological capabilities and prepare its workforce for future challenges.
During a meeting with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and other relevant agencies, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, emphasized the importance of integrating digital skills into the education system. He highlighted that making digital literacy courses mandatory in schools and providing incentives for participation are critical components of the plan.
Key Steps in the Initiative:
- Mandatory Digital Courses: Digital literacy will be made a core part of school curriculums to ensure students are equipped with essential technological skills.
- Incentivizing Participation: Citizens will be encouraged to participate through various incentives.
- Skills-Based Testing: The government plans to incorporate mandatory digital skills assessments into curriculum updates, university accreditation processes, and testing requirements for lecturers and educational institutions.
- Collaboration: Partnerships with subnational governments, educational organizations, and informal sectors will be prioritized to expand the reach of this initiative.
- Innovative Content Development: NITDA is working with organizations like Cisco to develop certifiable digital literacy content for students, teachers, and other key groups.

Minister Alausa stressed that digital literacy is crucial for workforce readiness, stating, “A digitally literate Nigeria is a better Nigeria.” He also commended NITDA for its efforts and urged agencies to further incorporate mandatory digital skills testing for lecturers, universities, and polytechnics.
