The Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government has announced that the new minimum wage will come into effect starting from May 1, 2024.
This decision has been made despite the ongoing negotiations of the Tripartite Committee On National Minimum Wage being yet to conclude.
The Minister of State Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, revealed on Wednesday during the May Day celebration in Abuja that the new national minimum wage, although not yet finalized, is slated to take effect from May 1, 2024.
She acknowledged the delay in its completion but assured that extensive consultations are underway to expedite the process.
Breaking News: Tinubu Administration Increased Civil Servants’ Salaries
Meanwhile, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, advocated for a living wage of ₦615,000 for Nigerian workers during an interview on Channels TV on the same day.
He criticized the government’s recent announcement of a salary increase ranging from 25 percent to 35 percent across various consolidated salary structures, labeling it as mischievous.
Ajaero emphasized the urgent need for a new minimum wage, as the previous one had expired on April 18. He further accused the government of obstructing negotiations by refusing to reconvene the negotiating committee after its adjournment.
