House of Representatives Confirms Olufemi Oluyede as New Chief of Army Staff

The House of Representatives, led by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, has officially confirmed Olufemi Oluyede as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS). 

Oluyede’s confirmation followed the presentation of a report by Babajimi Benson, Chairman of the Committee on Defence, during a plenary session.

The confirmation process included a screening conducted by the joint committee on army and defence on Wednesday. 

Oluyede had been serving as Acting COAS since his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His appointment followed the ill-health and subsequent passing of his predecessor, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja.

Oluyede’s confirmation marks a critical step in strengthening Nigeria’s military leadership, particularly as the country grapples with various security challenges.

His role will involve overseeing operations to address insurgency, banditry, and other security concerns while implementing reforms in the Nigerian Army.
