More details have surfaced about how Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, spent his six-month jail term.
According to a report by *The Punch*, Bobrisky was initially taken to Ikoyi Custodial Centre on April 12, 2024, after being convicted for naira mutilation.
Sources revealed that after attracting significant attention at the Ikoyi facility, Bobrisky, who was assigned prison number S682/2024, was moved to the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri.
A credible source mentioned that he was relocated within a few days of his arrival at Ikoyi due to the publicity his presence generated. After spending some time at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, he was again transferred to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri.
The source noted that Bobrisky was visited by relatives while in custody, and there were detailed records of his activities. It was also reported that Bobrisky appeared “gentle and sober” during his time in prison.
The report highlighted that special provisions are often made for inmates classified as “Very Important Persons” (VIPs) who might be at risk if mixed with the general prison population. Such VIP inmates are usually placed in a back or single cell reserved for well-behaved individuals.
These special cells are often furnished according to the inmates’ preferences, and access to them typically comes with significant costs, determined by the officers in charge.
A source noted that this arrangement may have applied to Bobrisky, suggesting he might have stayed in a “special cell” during his time in Kirikiri.
The source also explained that negotiations regarding these arrangements often begin in court and that Bobrisky was shielded from other inmates during his incarceration.
However, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, Abubakar Umar, denied claims of preferential treatment for VIPs, insisting that all inmates receive the same treatment. He added that the report would be investigated.
