The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN), has emphasized the necessity of adhering to the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy in Nigeria.
He warned that the ICPC will take decisive action against any official or individual who defies the court’s decision.
The Supreme Court’s landmark judgment, delivered on July 11, 2024, affirmed the financial autonomy of Nigeria’s 774 local government councils.
The ruling was aimed at reinforcing the independence of local governments and rejected state governments’ attempts to dissolve democratically elected local government councils.
Speaking at the 6th Annual General Assembly of the Network of Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIWA), Aliyu reiterated the ICPC’s commitment to holding key stakeholders accountable and reducing corruption.
He stated that the ICPC would take action against any state-level official who violates the Supreme Court’s decision, emphasizing the importance of political independence for local governments.
