NLC Threatens Nationwide Shutdown Should Police Arrest, Detain Joe Ajaero

The leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning that it is prepared to initiate a nationwide strike if its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, is arrested or detained by the Nigeria Police.

This declaration was made on Tuesday morning following an emergency meeting of the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC).

The meeting was convened to discuss the police’s invitation to Ajaero over allegations of financing terrorism.

During the NEC meeting, it was decided that Ajaero would comply with the police’s invitation.

However, the NLC emphasized that its legal counsel would request additional time before presenting Ajaero to law enforcement.

Deputy President of the NLC, Comrade Ado Kabiru Sani, called on the nation’s workforce to be prepared for immediate action if the police detain Ajaero.

He stated, “As a committed labour centre, we will honour the invitation of the police because we are not a faceless organization, but we are working with our lawyer for an extension of time.

In the event that the President is arrested, all workers will down tools immediately. We should wait for further directives from our leadership.”

This strong stance underscores the NLC’s determination to protect its leadership and the union’s interests amidst these allegations.
