Rabiu Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections and former governor of Kano State, recently made bold allegations regarding the influence of certain forces from Lagos over Northern Nigeria.
Speaking during the convocation ceremony at Skyline University in Kano, Kwankwaso expressed concerns about various challenges facing the northern region, such as insecurity, poverty, hunger, and economic struggles.
He claimed that these “Lagos forces” are attempting to exert control over the north, including significant influence in the Kano emirate, suggesting interference in the appointment of traditional leaders.
He alleged that individuals from Lagos are working to impose and redirect taxes away from the north to Lagos, affecting the economic standing of northern states.
Furthermore, Kwankwaso mentioned pressures on northern companies to relocate their headquarters to Lagos, subjecting them to different tax regimes.
Addressing Northern lawmakers, Kwankwaso called for vigilance to protect the region from economic and political marginalization.
He recalled past incidents where financial incentives allegedly influenced northern legislators, causing adverse economic outcomes.
He also highlighted concerns about the growing disparity between the rich and poor, warning of efforts that exacerbate economic inequality.
These statements reflect deep-rooted tensions and concerns about regional influence and resource control within Nigeria’s complex political and economic landscape.
