Army Officer Dies After Wife Sets Him Ablaze

A Nigerian Army officer, Lt. Samson Haruna, has died from severe burns after he was allegedly set ablaze by his wife during a domestic dispute at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Plateau News reports that counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, disclosed the incident in a post on 𝕏 on Tuesday, noting that the fatal attack occurred on September 22, 2025.

According to sources, Haruna, a medical doctor serving as the Regimental Medical Officer (RMO) at the 6 Battalion, had a heated altercation with his wife, identified as Mrs Samson Haruna.

“A source said the officer… had a heated argument with his wife, which resulted in her dousing him with petrol, PMS, and setting him on fire,” Makama reported.

The officer was rushed to the Military Reference Section (MRS) within the barracks for initial treatment before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for intensive care.

Despite efforts by medical teams, Lt. Haruna succumbed to his injuries.

“The officer, however, succumbed to his injuries despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life,” the source added.

Security sources confirmed that Mrs Haruna has been arrested and is currently in custody. Investigations have commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
