Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has expressed deep concern over the mass uprising, looting, and destruction of properties following the start of nationwide protests against the economic hardship under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
During a live broadcast, Egbetokun highlighted the significant challenges posed by the unrest and instructed all police units to be on red alert to ensure public safety.
Egbetokun stated, “Police stations have been destroyed. There have been attempts to take over government houses,” and he noted the widespread looting of public and private warehouses and facilities.
He reported incidents of unprovoked attacks on security personnel, with one policeman killed and others seriously injured in areas including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kaduna, Kano, and Gombe.
In response to the escalating situation, Egbetokun emphasized, “In light of the current situation, the Nigeria Police Force has placed all units on red alert.
Our officers are fully mobilised and prepared to respond swiftly and decisively to public safety and order.”
While acknowledging the citizens’ right to protest, Egbetokun reminded them that this right comes with responsibilities.
“We acknowledge the right of citizens to protest, but this right is not absolute. Citizens also have duties and responsibilities towards their nation, including being law-abiding and loyal.
Understanding your rights is important, but it is equally crucial to fulfill your duties and responsibilities.”
The IGP also addressed the use of red bands by police officers, explaining, “The red bands we are wearing signify that our command is on high alert.
” He pointed out the difficulties in serving court orders to individuals making threats on social media, noting, “Those claiming they were not served court orders must understand that serving faceless individuals is challenging.
Their threats were made on social media, and they were served through the same platform.”
