Policemen Teargas Journalists, Protesters In Abuja

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force reportedly fired teargas canisters at #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters in Abuja on Friday.

According to reports obtained by Plateau News, the protesters had assembled at the popular Berger roundabout in Abuja to continue their demonstration against the economic hardship in the country, which began on Thursday, August 1.

Journalists covering the protest were also affected by the teargas fired by security operatives at various locations where the protesters had gathered.

This incident highlights the escalating tensions between the protesters and security forces as citizens express their dissatisfaction with the current economic situation.

Despite the use of force by the police, the protesters remain determined to voice their grievances and demand better governance.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun announced on Thursday that the Nigeria Police Force is considering seeking assistance from other security agencies and the Nigerian military to address the violence erupting in some states. This statement was made during a media briefing in Abuja.

Egbetokun highlighted that the events on the first day of the nationwide protest, which began on August 1, showed a transition from peaceful demonstrations to a mass uprising and widespread looting.

He noted that hoodlums have been targeting innocent Nigerians, looting, and destroying both private and government properties.

The police chief explained that the primary motives of the rioters appear to be looting and destruction.

He stated, “In the light of the current situation, the Nigeria Police Force has placed all units on red alert.

Our officers are fully mobilised and prepared to respond swiftly and decisively to any further threats to public safety and order. We remain committed and resolute to protecting life and property and ensuring that law and order are maintained across the nation.”

Egbetokun also called on groups using the protests as a cover to destabilize the country to remember that the same constitution granting them the right to protest also obliges them to obey the laws of the land.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining public safety and order amidst the ongoing protests against economic hardship and poor governance.

This situation underscores the significant challenges faced by security forces in balancing the rights of citizens to protest with the need to prevent violence and maintain order.

The involvement of additional security agencies and the military could mark a significant escalation in the response to the unrest.
