On Thursday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for Nigerian workers. This announcement came during a meeting with leaders of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja.

Here are the major highlights from the agreement between the Federal Government of Nigeria and Organized Labour Unions:

1. Minimum Wage Approval: President Tinubu approved a ₦70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers, with a commitment to review the national minimum wage law every three years.

2. Private Sector and Sub-Nationals Support: The President promised to find ways to assist the private sector and sub-national governments in paying the new minimum wage.

3. University Unions’ Demands: President Tinubu also committed to using his discretionary powers to meet the demands of university unions for unpaid salaries over the past four months.

4. Provision of CNG Buses: The President has pledged to give 36 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered buses, each with a seating capacity of 100, to the TUC and NLC.

Following the meeting, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero, flanked by TUC President Comrade Festus Usifo and other labor representatives, stated that the unions had accepted the offer.

Ajaero highlighted that the acceptance was influenced by the additional incentives and the promise of a regular review every three years, which marks a significant improvement over past practices.
