A Nigerian Army retiree, Colonel BT Vandi, was found dead at the Defence Academy base camp on Vom Road, Jos, Plateau State.
The incident occurred shortly after he checked into the camp guest room on July 16, and he was discovered deceased in his room by an attendant around 3:20 pm on July 17.
The body of the late Col Vandi is being moved to the 3 Division Military Hospital in Jos for an autopsy and further investigation.
Major Aliyu Danja, the acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 3rd Division, confirmed the incident and stated that an official statement will be released.
In a separate development, the Supreme Court has overturned the death penalty for Sergeant Akawu Bala of the Nigerian Army. Bala had been on death row for 12 years, following a conviction by the General Court Martial for the fatal shooting of Isa Mohammed on December 9, 2012.
Bala’s appeal was heard by a five-justice panel on March 16, 2017, which ruled in his favor, thereby acquitting him from the death sentence.
