Public frustration is mounting as the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu faces criticism for lavish spending amidst Nigeria’s economic challenges.
The recent acquisition of a new presidential jet, reportedly costing over ₦150 billion, has sparked outrage, particularly given the tough economic climate and rising inflation, which has reached 33%.
This spending comes despite President Tinubu’s calls for Nigerians to endure the hardships caused by policies like the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates.
Critics view the purchase as insensitive, especially considering the ongoing cost of living crisis.

In addition to the jet, other extravagant expenditures by the current administration have drawn public ire:
1. Presidential Yacht: The government faced backlash over plans to purchase a ₦5 billion presidential yacht.
Although the National Assembly reallocated the funds to student loans following public outcry, questions remain about the government’s intent.
2. ₦21 Billion Vice President’s Residence: The completion of Vice President Kashim Shettima’s official residence for ₦21 billion, prioritized by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has also been criticized as wasteful amidst other urgent infrastructure needs.
3. ₦1.5 Billion Cars for the Office of the First Lady: The government allocated ₦1.5 billion for vehicles for the Office of the First Lady, an office not recognized by the constitution, further fueling public dissatisfaction.
4. ₦160 Million Cars for National Assembly Members: The provision of luxurious SUVs to lawmakers, each costing approximately ₦160 million, has been condemned, particularly given the current economic situation.
5. ₦90 Billion Hajj Subsidy: The government’s expenditure of ₦90 billion on the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage is under investigation by anti-corruption agencies, with allegations of fund misappropriation by officials of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).
Amid these controversies, prominent figures like former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi have criticized the administration’s spending decisions, calling for greater transparency and accountability.
Despite the hardships, the government continues to assure citizens that these challenges will be temporary, though public trust remains strained.
