The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has convened an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in response to the police summoning its National President, Joe Ajaero, over allegations of financing terrorism and other related charges.
The NEC meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, and will include leaders from all NLC affiliates and state chapter representatives.
The meeting notification, titled “Notice of Emergency National Executive Council Meeting,” was issued by NLC Secretary General Emmanuel Ugboaja.
The letter stated the importance of the meeting in light of the police’s actions against Ajaero, who was summoned following an ongoing investigation that implicated him in charges of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, subversion, and cybercrime.
The police letter, signed by ACP Adamu Mu’azu on behalf of the Commissioner of Police Intelligence, directed Ajaero to appear at the IRT Complex, Abattoir near Guzape Junction on Tuesday, August 20, at 10 a.m., with a warning that failure to comply would result in a warrant of arrest.
This development follows a police raid on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja on July 7, during which security forces searched for documents allegedly linked to a “subversive” international figure.
The NLC has condemned the raid and accused the government of interfering in its internal affairs, including attempts to reduce the tenure of trade union leaders.
The Congress has also called for the release of its detained members and the return of seized documents.
The emergency NEC meeting will address these concerns and determine the NLC’s course of action in response to the ongoing situation.
