Ongoing academic and infrastructural advancements at Plateau State University (PLASU) Bokkos have garnered high praise from Nigerian Senate Leaders. Senator Diket Plang, representing Plateau Central in the Nigerian Senate, lauded the university’s significant expansions, noting their potential to position PLASU as a globally competitive institution.
Senator Plang, who holds the positions of Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labour Employment and Productivity and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Federal Character Commission, visited the university on May 12th. During his visit, he toured key facilities including a digital learning centre he facilitated and commended the PLASU management for their effective leadership.
“I want to encourage and thank the management of PLASU for what we are seeing. They are carrying the burden of the entire Plateau State,” Senator Plang said.
The Senator also acknowledged the support of the State Governor in facilitating the operationalization of key academic units.
“I want to thank the Governor for the fact that some strategic facilities are now operating,” Senator Plang remarked, expressing his satisfaction with the establishment of the Faculties of Medical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Law, and Agriculture. He further expressed his belief that graduates from these programs would contribute meaningfully to society both within Nigeria and globally.
Over the past two years, PLASU has experienced substantial growth in its academic offerings, expanding from four to eleven faculties and introducing over 68 programs, including postgraduate studies, a significant increase from the initial 16 undergraduate programs at its inception. The university has also undertaken extensive infrastructural development, including the construction of new lecture theatres, office spaces, and student accommodations, alongside the paving of the campus road network. 1 Notably, PLASU has addressed its lack of connection to the national power grid by installing large solar farms that provide a reliable power supply to all offices and hostels, as well as ensuring year-round access to water resources.
During his visit, Senator Plang toured a newly established digital learning centre, a project he facilitated through his membership in the Senate Committee on ICT and Digital Learning, in collaboration with the National Information Development Agency (NITDA). He explained his passion for educational development in Plateau State as the driving force behind his efforts to secure the centre for PLASU. Plang highlighted the centre’s central location and potential to benefit graduates from various tertiary institutions across the state.
“I decided to bring it to PLASU because this is central and can benefit every other institution in the state,” he stated, expressing his satisfaction with the university management’s partnership and their provision of additional computers to supplement the initial donation. Senator Plang also pledged his future support for other developmental aspects, including sports.
Acting Vice Chancellor of PLASU, Professor Shedrack Gaya Best, expressed his gratitude for the Senator’s contributions to the university’s infrastructural development and appealed for continued support. “I believe that this is a tip of the iceberg. I believe that you can do more,” Professor Best stated.
The Acting Vice Chancellor also highlighted the recent success of the university’s athletes at the National Universities Games festival, where a PLASU student won a gold medal and will represent Nigeria at upcoming global competitions in July.
